The official Notice to Proceed for the park was issued on April 15, so as of today, May 13, there are 242 days remaining on the contract. Work is progressing well. The entrance off of Poplar Street has had some work begun as the Columbus Ave. temporary entrance is not usable with the NKP and C&O tracks being torn up for replacement. Park Construction

February 22, 2010

The Pork Packing building has been down for some time now. The ground has been leveled off somewhat, but we have no time table for future work. The grant money is still available from ODOT, but the federal government had put all grants on hold so dates aren't yet available.

The following are portions of e-mails sent from Ellen Gatrell to FRPS members concerning the progress of the pork processing building demolition.

December 17, 2009

Photos of the demolition of the Pork Packing Building are in the Review Times Tuesday, December 15, 2009 paper. You can access it at www.reviewtimes.com. When you read the article, please note there are some errors in it. Burgess & Niple is the engineering firm from Columbus Ohio who has been working on the project for 8-9 years, All Aspects Contracting, Elyria, Ohio are the demolition contractors hired by the City of Fostoria to demolish the building and clean up the debris. FRPS, to my knowledge, has not donated any funds to the city for the project, but we were instrumental in helping the city acquire the $815,000. grant from ODOT by supplying the Fostoria Railfan Surveys. The surveys were tangible proof of railfans traveling to Fostoria to view trains, etc. Eddie had access to the demolition and has many more photos taken over the two days and still taking photos during the cleanup process. He has them available on trainorders.com and if you are a member of that website you can view them.

Talked to Dan Thornton, City of Fostoria engineer today. I asked him if All Aspects Contracting, Elyria, OH would begin the demolition this week on the pork packing building. He said it will probably be December 16 until they will begin demolion of the building. There was an asbestos issue on some of the windows and apparently that is being taken care of now. The city will have a 30-day demoliton contract for the project and it will be carried over until mid January, 2010. FRPS is trying to keep all railfans informed of the updated progress so the photos can be taken when the demolition begins.

FRPS tries to keep the interested in knowing the info on the Fostoria Iron Triangle Rail Park. process.
All Aspects Contractors, Elyria, were at the site yesterday. Paperwork is not completed for the demolition of the pork building. All Aspects have a job in Fremont and will probably complete that and move their equipment back to Fostoria afterward. The guess is the Fostoria demolition will be started AFTER Thanksgiving, with no set date yet.
I asked about how long it would take to bring down the building and he said about 4 days BUT getting the site clean, removing the bricks and filling in the basement would take longer than that.

Update on the Fostoria Iron Triangle Rail Park
I drove to the rail park location this Friday evening and was there the same time some of the equipment was being delivered by All Aspects Contracting, Elyria, Ohio.
They had just finished a job in Toledo and were moving the equipment to the rail park. All Aspects had applied for their EPA permits but do not have them yet. It is my understanding there is a 10-day waiting period. I asked how long it would take for them to get the building down and clear the area and asked if a week was about right. They said it would take longer than that.
Advise all who are interested !!! The project will begin sometime soon. get your cameras ready. We will try and keep you posted on updates. Anyone else who can help in these efforts, do not hesitate to advise.
How good to see something happening at the park location !!! Those who said it would never happen -- well, it's too bad they have no confidence !!! Those who said it would never happen--well, how about becoming a member of FRPS or better yet, help us financially with our projects. One being the moving of the T&OC Depot to the rail park. Show me the money !!!
Ellen
